| DESCRIPTION | Earth science data are inherently multidimensional, often containing rich spatial and temporal structures from observations, reanalysis products, and numerical model simulations. This course provides upper-year undergraduate and early-stage graduate students with mathematical and statistical tools to analyze such complex datasets and to reveal the physical mechanisms embedded within them. Topics include probability distributions, confidence intervals, linear regression, Fourier spectral analysis, time-series filtering, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis. Emphasis will be placed on connecting quantitative methods with physical interpretation, enabling students to move beyond data description toward mechanism-oriented analysis of Earth system variability and change. |
