DESCRIPTION | Managing carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels is a major concern for the development of sustainable society in the future. It is a interdiciplinary challenge involving engineering, chemical, physical and social sciences as well as policy and legal issues. Carbon capture and sequestration has been widely recognized as an important technology to reduce carbon emissions. This course will introduce the major technologies to capture carbon dioxide from power plants and other industrial emissions, and ultimately from ambient air. Moreover, advanced CO2 utilization technologies, including chemical and biological utilizations, will be introduced as well. In addition to the basic science and engineering challenges of each technology, the full spectrum of economic, environmental, regulatory, and policy aspects, as well as their implications for regional and global carbon management strategies of the future will be discussed. |
