DESCRIPTION | This course is taught by a teaching team of a group of faculties from four Hubs to introduce the basics of critical thinking and data literacy. The course will be delivered using the problem-solving approach with interdisciplinary applications. The contents include barriers to critical thinking, characteristics of a critical thinker, argument, cognitive bias, logical fallacies, inductive reasoning, and simple probability and statistical models. Students will be equipped with critical thinking and data analyzing skills to analyze problems of reasoning, evaluate the truthfulness of evidence, examine the fallacies of thinking, construct valid arguments, and make better decisions in personal and professional life. |

DESCRIPTION | This course will help students adapt to university life through advising, sharing and discussion, and applying the science of well-being to enhance their personal and interpersonal development. It also aims to foster their self-understanding and confidence as young adults who can fully enjoy their university education and career thereafter. The course has 3 components: Lectures/Seminars, Self-Directed Experience, and Advising/Community Meetings. Lectures and Seminars will orientate students to their respective f personal enrichment. DESCRIPTION | This is an intensive English language course for students in their first year of study who need language enhancement and proficiency training to build a strong foundation in English. Students will develop the language skills necessary to communicate effectively and complete academic tasks in an English-medium university. They will also build skills and habits for self-directed learning at university. The content of this course focuses on developing students’ language foundation, and tasks and activities are designed so that they can receive enhanced teacher support and feedback. |

DESCRIPTION | This course aims for students in their first year of study and will develop students’ spoken and written language proficiency. The course also introduces academic literacy skills common to all disciplines. Students will learn to evaluate others’ opinions, develop strong arguments and communicate those arguments effectively in written and spoken English. In addition to traditional academic writing, the course includes elements of academic communication that go beyond the text level to incorporate academic communication that includes text and audio. They will also build skills and habits for self-directed learning at university. |

DESCRIPTION | This course introduces students to the theory and practice of public speaking. The basic terms, concepts, and theories of public speaking will be covered. Using selected speeches, students will learn to analyze rhetorical structure and style and to understand how speakers and writers can persuade an audience. Students will write and critique their own writing and that of their peers using stories, analogies, and metaphors. They will learn to construct and defend effective arguments in a speech and to apply the rhetorical techniques they have learned. Throughout the course, students will write and deliver various types of speeches to a partner, a group, the whole class, and then to a public group, soliciting feedback from their audience. By the end of the course, students will have developed their speech making skills and become more confident in presenting their ideas. |

DESCRIPTION | Science-Fiction (Sci-fi) Storytelling offers a creative exploration of sci-fi topics such as perception of reality, existentialism in the multiverse, and philosophical and ethical questions on identity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), genetic engineering and so on. This course not only discusses these topics, but also offers students opportunities to exercise the power of creative imagination with critical thinking to build on these themes by developing original sci-fi stories. In this analytical, creative, critical thinking and collaborative process, students will team up to develop and present their story analysis and creation. This course offers visions of the future through studying important visionary film masters and related creative sci-fi works in films, TV and animations, which stimulates thought-provoking discussion and forward thinking. Students will combine sci-fi knowledge, technique and the power of imaginative storytelling, analytical, creative and critical thinking to screen-related research, analysis, and sci-fi story creation through world, character and tension building. |
